Decks

Custom decks

The customer draws the deck in 3D: the size and the height of the door, composite or wood, the direction of the boards, the border, the stairs and the railing. The form counts the boards, the joists, the beams and the posts, and you get an estimate ready for the site measure.

How it works

For deck builders. The 3D model stands beside the steps for the whole process: the deck at the sliding door, board by board, with its stairs and its railing, changing with every answer. A rectangle or an L, as high above the ground as the threshold of the door. Capped composite, PVC, western red cedar, pressure-treated pine or ipe, laid along the house, away from it or on the diagonal, plain, in a picture frame border or with a divider. The form builds it the way a crew does: boards cut from stock lengths with the joints on a joist and staggered from row to row, 2x8 joists 16 inches on center, hung on a ledger and on beams, the beams on posts on concrete footings at most 6 feet apart. Stairs come from the height with risers of at most 7 3/4 inches; above 30 inches the form asks for a 36 inch railing of glass, cables or aluminum balusters, none that lets a 4 inch sphere through. A button lifts the boards off to show the framing, another shows the deck after dark with its lights. The price counts what the model builds: stock boards, feet of joists and beam, posts, border, fascia, stair treads, railing, lights, installation, permit and delivery. The customer sees a range, the binding price comes after the site measure; every amount is a parameter.

What this example shows

  • Model in 3D beside the steps: a rectangle or an L in feet and inches, at the height of the door
  • Boards cut from stock lengths, joints on a joist and staggered; the stock boards, joists, beams and posts counted from the plan
  • Capped composite, PVC, cedar, pressure-treated pine or ipe, laid along, away from the house or on the diagonal
  • Picture frame border with mitred corners and a divider; fascia on the edges
  • Stairs from the height, risers of at most 7 3/4 in; a 36 in railing in glass, cables or aluminum once the deck is over 30 in
  • A button lifts the boards off to show the joists, the beams and the posts on their footings
  • Lights in the boards and under the treads, a PDF on Letter paper, an estimate range before sales tax

For deck builders and outdoor remodeling contractors

A deck cost calculator and 3D designer for your website collects dimensions, decking, framing, stairs, and railing choices. Your team receives a project to review at the site measure, with an estimated range based on your rates.

Collect the shape and height of the deck

A square-foot figure does not describe the whole job. The example asks for a rectangle or L-shaped deck, dimensions, and height above the ground, then shows it against the house.

Customers compare capped composite, PVC, cedar, pressure-treated pine, and ipe. Board direction, a picture-frame border, and a divider change the layout and material calculation.

Connect the decking layout with the structure

The example calculates stock boards with cutting waste, joists, beams, ledger, and posts. Preview controls reveal the framing and show the deck lighting after dark. Stairs and railing choices follow the configured height and layout.

The PDF captures the design for your team to review. Footings, attachment to the house, ground conditions, spans, and local approval requirements are confirmed during project assessment.

Adjust materials, labor, and site charges

Panel settings include decking by the square foot, framing by the foot, posts and footings, ground preparation, borders, fascia, stairs, railings, and lighting. Installation, removal, permits, and delivery have their own rates.

You can maintain measure and build times, promotions, range width, and estimate validity. Customer-facing prices can also be switched off.

Compare the estimate with completed decks

Recreate a low rectangular deck and a raised L-shaped project. Change the board direction, add a border, and compare material quantities, stairs, and railing. Review the PDF and totals against your takeoff and installation scope.

Questions from businesses in this trade

Does the estimate include cutting waste?

Yes. The example calculates the stock boards needed for the selected layout, including waste.

Can customers see the framing?

Yes. A preview control lifts the boards to reveal the structure underneath.

Are stairs and railings included?

Yes. The form includes stairs and glass, cable, or aluminum-baluster railing options.

Is the displayed range a final construction quote?

It is a preliminary estimate for the configured project. Your team confirms the scope and price after the site measure.
